"We think of the people in our graduating class as family,
and we truly feel that their passing is like a family member having left us.
We feel a connection with each other that can never be broken.
Even if you had not seen that person in years,
you can pick up the conversation like you just saw them last week.
They will be deeply missed."

Please help us honor our classmates by sharing some memories in the tribute sections below.  Please feel free to add a memorial yourself if it is missing.

Douglas Burns

September 15th, 1953 - September 26th, 2008

I didn't spend enough time in our adult lives with my brother Doug, but was at least grateful that he managed to come for a visit in 2004 and we were able to see a number of sites in England, and even made it across the channel to visit France, Belgium and Germany.  He hadn't really travelled all that much outside of the US, so it was wonderful that he had that opportunity to see some really interesting places over here, and to spend time with my wife and children, which will always bring fond memories for me.

Obituary

Doug passed away on 26 September 2008 after a brief illness.  He'd lived in Missouri for most of his adult life, working in landscape gardening, but visited his family in Minnesota regularly and spent his last few months, and his final days, at his parents' home in Crystal.

Paul was a good friend and neighbor in many ways. Paul was one of only 2 people I liked a lot in my childhood neighborhood (between 63rd and 64th &Boone and Winnetka). Even way back in Kindergarten I was adoring him. By 12th grade we found out that we made good tennis opponents at Sunny Lane Park. Our first jobs out of Cooper 1972 were at Sears. I worked in the tailor shop and Paul came in to fix stuff with displays and mannequins. He hurried to my home when I needed to go to a hospital & brought me home again 2 days later. He was a good guy I have missed him.

Craig was my best friend throughout HS.  We had a lot of great times together.  I remember when Craig took me and Randy Hermes to Wisconsin in his red Ford Galaxy 500 for a night of bar hopping & fun.  Both Craig and Randy were 18 while I was 17.  What a great night!  Craig had a great family and I loved them like my own.  I didn't see Craig much after I moved to California in 1974.  It was like old times when both Craig and Randy flew to California to attend my wedding in 1976.  Craig visited me a few times after that.  He was a fantastic wrestler, great guy and a loyal friend.  I miss him and our adventures and time together.  RIP my friend until I see you you again!

Image When Roger and I were "going together" in early junior high, he gave me this picture of himself, which I believe was from kindergarten. On the back, he had put his phone number KE7-5253 (remember our phone numbers starting with Kellogg?) Even as a kindergartener he was hustling the girls, adding his phone number just in case they wanted to call him :-) Roger was full of life and fun to be around. The first ring I ever got was from him. I remember winding that fuzzy yarn around the band so it would fit. We maybe went together a week . . . you know how it was back then! Roger is keeping things hopping up in heaven, I am sure of that.

Sad to hear of Mark's death. He was a tremendously gifted actor, singer,  and dancer. He played the "fox" Renard in the world premiere of "the Little Prince" with me in 1983 at Playhouse by the River and before that he played Pippin in Pippin at the Shawnee Playhouse and he blew it out of the water. Best ever. My family will always remember and love him. He taught me so much, and was a real pal.

Comrade Kapitan and I were Cossacks for Mother Russia in the fall of '71. We danced and drank the dreary Russian nights away with our dear departed comrade Dorian Those were the days!
(Actually Mark did arrange my first underage alcohol purchase along with Brian Duescher)

From Philip Kupka on April 14th, 2011
My biggest memory of Mark was after we had graduated from high school...about 25 years as a matter of fact. It was at our class reunion. I remember how I was sort of jealous of Mark that night because he was so gifted in his ability to ballroom dance. He stole all the ladies hearts that night.
I also remember him as one of the "rascally Russians in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" that we did the fall of 1971.
Mark, you will be missed!

From Lisa Schirmers Sullivan on March 8th, 2011
Mark was always a surprise. He was the unlikely daredevil, the guy with the rosy cheeks and bright eyes and a quick smile that everybody loved. He loved his friends and he loved fun - pursued and new experiences as if he wanted to relish everything that life had to offer. He wanted to take every risk and try everything. I never once heard him say a bad word about anyone with harshness, and he kept a sense of humor. His wheels were always turning! and...he was a thinker! He would come in and out of my life for years but always, it was with a flowers and big dinner dates or something just a little wonderful. He did notice things that others would miss, and because he kidded around so much I was always taken back by some of the very knowing things he said. I went to New York City once with my Dad and I got this telegram at the hotel saying he'd thought I'd left without him! He was always bound for New York, and I'm glad he finally arrived and made it his home. I am deeply sad to learn of his passing, but will absolutlely never forget him- he was a very special friend to me. I'll have to catch up with him later :)

From Brian Duchscher on March 8th, 2011
Mark and I were best friends in high school. He lived at my house his senior year when his parents moved to Wisconsin so he could graduate from Cooper. We worked at the Terrace Theatre together as ushers as well. After we went our separate ways (college for me, New York for him) we stayed in touch for a while but got lost in our pursuits and, subsequently, were out of touch for most of the past 30 years. I did searches for him on occasion but with no results. On the day that George Carlin died, I got an email from Mark, quite out of the blue, expressing his sorrow at George's passing and recalling the hours we'd spent listening to his albums and laughing. We reconnected and spent many hours on the phone catching up, reminiscing, clearing stale air and discussing current events. I called him just before I walked into the Cooper all 70's party last October telling him I wish he could've joined me.

Mark was a very caring guy, expressive and observant. His insight to events going on around him were very keen. Not many people know this, but he was also one hell of a tap-dancer. He chased his dream of performing on stage and it took him around the globe. He helped shape my formitive years and will never be forgotten. "Break a Leg" Mark.

Seems like she and Bruce Parker went together forever. I always admired the relationship they had. It was like they were always supposed to be together. They married and had many loving children. Lorna died from a heart attack. Lorna always had a smile and was a positive person. My sympathies for her family.

From Terri Kohlbeck on July 3rd, 2012
Up thru elementary school at Meadow Lake, Lorna gave me an escape into her parents' peaceful home and her easy company. Within walking distance from 63d & Xylon to Bass Lake Rd & Boone, it was still a walk I dreaded in the winter but then was well worth the effort. Because of the tradition of women taking their husband's last name, I have failed to find school friends that I wanted to reconnect with after my divorce from a guy who had to make sure to demote the importance of girlfriends. And so I have wondered too long where Lorna went. I hope she didn't suffer.

Gayle was like a sister to me. We lived across the street from each other from birth and basically saw each other almost every day of our lives until I got married at age 20! She had a wry sense of humor that kept our group highly entertained for years. A big part of my childhood died when she left us. We were the keepers of each others’ hopes, dreams, and disappointments. She was a tall, beautiful, German blonde, but she never knew it! Her self-deprecating humor reflected that modesty. Wait, come to think of it, we didn’t escape that deprecation, either! But we all loved her in spite of, or perhaps because of, that biting wit. Here’s to you, Gayle: the 7th Wild Loose Woman.

Seeing her photo here has greatly assisted my memory of our ongoing joke about getting together at her parents' house with a plan to eat thin mint cookies until we were sickened. Then only a short while would pass and the mint cookie stock was replenished and ready for another sickening binge. We laughed all the while, knowing we were behaving in a way that could get our mothers (or fathers, I suppose) annoyed. And now I have another piece to my puzzle about what was available for fun when I was too young to stray unaccompanied out of the neighborhood. Again, another female friend who married & had a name change & I lost track of her. Look at this photo above. So much kindness still showed in her face. I can only guess that she was receiving chemo therapy at the time of this photo.

Image This picture was taken when our fifth grade class from Meadow Lake went to Chicago. In the picture are Rick Svindal, Mr. Glidden our teacher, and Bryan Wenz. Bryan was always the class clown, and if I remember correctly, got reprimanded frequently for it. My first memories of Bryan were when I lived on Rhode Island Avenue, across from First Lutheran Church of Crystal. Bryan's family lived across the street from us. When we were 4 or 5, we used to play in our doghouse ~ yes, we were that small. Bryan was fun-loving. His family had some challenging times. Will forever remember Bryan's smile. Another life lost way too soon. Bryan was loved by many. ♥

Brian was good at making surprise visits. While in high school, I thought we lived far apart, but we really didn't. Brian & his brothers could make a rowdy group with my brothers during summer vacation. I got to know Brian best when he had an amazing growth spurt in 10th grade and was sort of hiding in a foyer corner when I heard his loud whisper, "Terri!" When I saw him alone & felt concerned, he giggled; that led to laughing for the sake of laughing. Finally he said, "Look at my high water pants. I couldn't find anything else to wear today." He may have been a high-testosterone guy while hanging with other guys but I saw the best part of his character, according to my impression. Many times he surprised me by HOW he dropped by: revving a snowmobile on my parents' front lawn at sundown on a terribly frigid day or walking into my back yard with his very young sister sitting on his shoulders, balancing by firmly gripping his hair.Learning of his death & not knowing why is at the top of my heap for most frustrating, miserable losses. He was rough, I've learned fairly recently, at times when he disliked something about some other guy. I believe he abandoned such tendencies long before he was murdered. If anyone knows differently about why Brian was found in a lake without his wallet or favorite ring, I need to know. I just NEED to know.
